Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I
become an official?
A: To
become an official, you need to register with the MOA
and take the test. More specific information can be found at our "Steps to Becoming an
Official" page.
Q: What is the
time commitment?
A:
During the Football season (typically late August to
early November) we meet once a week as a pool. Typically this
takes 1-2 hours. The rest of the time commitment is up to you, as
you can sign up for games that fit into your schedule.
Q: What is
"Study Club”?
A: This
is when the members of the pool get together to go
over "study club" handouts, talk about things that happened in the
previous weeks games, look at training materials and schedule the next
weeks games.
Q: What do I
do about a uniform?
A:
Uniforms and equipment can be purchased locally at
Universal Athletics or ordered online through various uniform
suppliers. However before investing in equipment and a uniform it
is a good idea to talk to the head of the pool and see if there is any
uniforms that have been donated to the pool by officials that have
retired, or if there are any other options to help reduce the cost of a
uniform.
Q: I know
quite a bit about Football but little about officiating, how do I gain
the knowledge needed to do the job?
A:
Studying the rules and other materials sent to you by
the MOA is a good way to start preparing to become an official, however
there is no substitute for on the field training. Many new
officials are hesitant to sign up for their first game because they
feel unprepared but working a few games with an experienced crew of
officials, who are there to help you learn, is one of the best ways to
begin the learning process. Becoming a master official takes
years, there is a lot to learn and no one expects a new official to be
at that level when they start. Mistakes will be made... we all
make mistakes, but if we learn and grow from them than the quality of
officiating in the Flathead valley will improve.
